Clubs & Activities

Below is a list of the extracurricular clubs and activities that were offered to students.   Thank you for your interest!

If you have children that participate in these clubs, please consider making a tax credit donation to the school to support these programs.  We rely heavily on tax credit funds to keep these opportunities going.  Please choose "After School Clubs" on the tax credit form and then write the name of the club from below on your memo line (paying with check) or in the notes (paying online).  Anything helps from a simple $20 to the max of $400 per household.  Click on the link below for information on how to donate.  Thank you for the consideration.

How do I donate my tax credit to Desert Star?

National Elementary Honor Society (NEHS)

The National Elementary Honor Society was started this year to motivate students in grades 4-6 to become future leaders of our school.  Students were nominated based on grades and test scores and then were asked to apply.  Students selected meet bi-weekly on Thursdays and are required to do a minimum of 3 volunteer hours a quarter.

National Junior Honor Society (NJHS)

The National Junior Honor Society has been active at Desert Star for almost 10 years.  It is for 7th and 8th graders who are first invited based on their GPA and behavior and then asked to apply to be inducted.   Students in NJHS are required to sell at the school store weekly and also need to do a minimum of 7 volunteer hours each quarter and during the summer.   Students in NJHS volunteer throughout the school year at various events and help run the Diabetes Drive, Toilet Paper Drive for CASA and the Leukemia Drive.  Students meet 3 times a month on Thursdays including mentoring NEHS one of those Thursdays.

Morning News Team

The news team has been at Desert Star since the school opened.  Students are given the opportunity to tryout at the beginning of each school year and their tryouts are live on air.  Students that are selected commit to one day a week before school and during the first 15 minutes of the day to announce school events, sports, news and lunch menus.   This is open to any student that can read from any grade.

Student Council
Our student council meets weekly to plan for school events and support other clubs on campus by approving their requests.  Student council hosts middle school (6-8) dances throughout the school year and supports a free dress day each month, with partial proceeds going to a charity selected by council members.  Our council is comprised of students that want to be a voice and a positive leader for Desert Star School.

The Yearbook Committee is responsible for the creation and sale of the Desert Star yearbooks.  Students enrolled in the yearbook committee take pictures, design pages, advertise, and sell the yearbooks in the spring.  The yearbook committee is available to students in grades 6-8.

Environmental Club
The Environmental Club at Desert Star promotes environmental awareness on our campus and in our community.  The students research, plant, tend, and harvest several school garden beds.  They also recycle all paper, plastic, glass, and cardboard waste on campus.  The Environmental Club is open to students in grades sixth through eighth.

Vex Robotics
We currently have one Robotics Team in our 5th grade and hope to add more soon.  The team meets twice a week after school to learn about robotics and work on building and programming their robot for district and state challenges.
