Attention Parents

WHAT? Fluency Project
WHO ?  K-3 Students
WHEN?  September
WHERE?  At school AND at home!

What is Fluency?

Fluency is the ability to read a text accurately and quickly with expression.  Fluency is important because it allows students to focus on making meaning of text rather than devoting time and energy to decoding words.

What are the students doing in school?

The Fluency Project will begin this semester. Your child will read at their instructional level for 1-minute with the teacher. At the end of 1-minute your child will count the number of words or letters read correctly and graph the results. The same text will be used until mastered. With repeated readings and practice, the number of words your child reads will steadily increase and will be illustrated on their graph.

Your child will also be given additional time to retell what they read. They are encouraged to retell the beginning, middle, and end as well as include 2 or more details, based on what they were able to read in 1 minute.

How can you help at home?

Your child will have a copy of the passage or words they are reading at school for the Fluency Project for reading practice.

  • Model good reading with your child.
  • Encourage your child to read to you.
  • Help your child document their 1 minute reading at home on the home graph.(This will start after fall break in October).
  • Provide a place for them to look and read to themselves.
  • Be sure after every reading that your child retells what they read to you giving 2 or more details!

Thanks for joining in this journey toward becoming better, more fluent readers!
